Happy Birthday, Sophie! You got a wonderful birthday surprise when Grandma Lauren and Grandpa Bob drove up from Arizona to visit for your birthday weekend. We celebrated your special day with lots of snuggles, your very own cake, balloons, presents, and lots of playing.

Co-pays and more co-pays

What a week! The girls both had double ear infections and are on antibiotics, and then I got bronchitis and pink eye. I have no idea where the pink eye came from, but luckily since the girls were already on antibiotics it doesn't seem like they will get it. We stayed home this weekend to rest, mostly for Sophie and me. I think Lucia is feeling back to normal.

On Saturday it was 50 degrees and she played outside for a couple of hours.

On Sunday it snowed!

She doesn't usually take a nap anymore, but sometimes on Saturdays she is so exhausted from the long week that she just crashes. Yesterday she slept on the couch like this, with her foot up in the air, for an hour until I woke her up. She also only sucks her thumb when she's sleeping. I have no idea how we're going to break that habit.

Sophie's front bottom tooth finally poked through, but it's not big enough yet to get a picture of it. The other bottom one is also right there and should be coming through any day now.

Next weekend is birthday weekend for Sophie, so we're hoping to all be healthy by then!

I snapped a few pictures today, and when I was looking through them I was struck at how similar they look in this one. Normally I don't think they look much alike, but here you can see they have the same cheeks and chin. I think once Sophie gets more hair they'll start to look more like sisters.

I moved down the end of the hallway and Sophie followed. Here's Lucia trying to keep her out. But she's not one to give up that easily! Also, did you see that she's wearing jeans? It's the first time in months that she wanted to wear them. I had to cinch them up with dapper snappers and they are still falling down. No wonder she never wants to wear them.

Lucia decided to show her the butterflies, but would only let her have the orange ones. Sophie is getting into all her stuff lately, and it's definitely hard for her to share.

Mid-Winter Blahs

Hello out there. I know I've been pretty quiet lately... we're just busy and I haven't really been in the mood to take many pictures lately. Sophie is fully recovered from her stomach virus, and now she is getting her first tooth (on the bottom). It's been right there on the verge of popping out since Saturday. So stay tuned for a picture of an almost-one-year-old with a tooth one of these days!

We took Lucia skiing again. She did great and really loved it. Next time we'll take her on the chair lift so she can really get a feel of what it's like to ski in the mountains.

I took all these pictures with my phone and they are really terrible, but it's all I've got. That's John and Lucia on the tow rope, right straight down in the middle. This is at Alta. Not a bad place to learn to ski!

Sophie and I hung out in the snow while they skiied. She was pretty frustrated because she couldn't walk in her snowsuit.

Sophie came to work with me one day last week. Here she is checking out my messy desk.

11 months

Happy 11 months, Sophie! Poor little girl was pretty sick-- she did end up throwing up a few times and definitely lost some weight. She finally recovered after a week of being sick, and was pretty much back to normal by last Wednesday. We're happy it seems to be behind us, and no one else in the house got sick.

Lucia got a haircut this morning. Hopefully it'll be a little easier to manage, and she was happy because they put glitter in it and gave her a pink balloon with two suckers!

A Nasty Bug

Sophie has some sort of stomach bug that has required 15+ diaper changes and 5 new outfits in the past day-and-a-half. I'm staying home from work because obviously she can't go to Miss Merr's this way. Poor little thing is pretty miserable. So far she hasn't thrown up (knock on wood), and I'm hoping this is over soon and doesn't spread to the rest of the family.

She loves her Little People airplane that she got for Christmas and it helps distract her from the sick!

4 in 2012

Happy Birthday to our big girl! We can't believe she is already four years old. New Years Eve brings back such memories of that day and night in the hospital, going through labor, watching the fireworks out the window, and waiting and waiting to meet her. I don't think we ever could have imagined what a smart, funny, loving, and dramatic girl she would become. Every day is an adventure... it's not always easy, but it's always filled with love and endless fun. I can't wait for many more days to see what else she will do!

Lucia at one day old:

We got back home late last night, so we had a pretty low key day today. Her friend Maya came over to sing happy birthday, share a cupcake and help open presents. Lucy got a new pink balance bike, and she was really excited. All day she kept saying, "It's my special day, because I'm the birthday girl. Right, mom? Right?" Tomorrow at school she gets to bring a treat to share with her friends, and then she'll do the "walk around the sun" four times.

Sophie was pretty happy to be home, and also she was probably hoping that she'd luck out and get one of those cupcakes.

Winter Fun

Here's a few more pictures of some of the fun stuff we've been doing this winter.

Lucia and I went skiing at Alta! She only did 3 runs, but there was no crying so I consider that a success!

We went to see the Christmas lights at Temple Square in downtown Salt Lake. She got to ride the lightrail, and that was way more fun than actually seeing the lights. She really wanted to go inside the "castle" (aka the Temple), but only the Mormons can do that so she was pretty disappointed.

They got to play in the snow in Wisconsin!

Santa was here!

Happy Holidays! We're spending the week in Wisconsin, and having lots of fun visiting the family. Lucia and Sophie are such lucky (and spoiled) little girls. We made a special request for Santa to come to our house in Utah early, so the girls got to open presents on the 23rd. They must have been really good girls this year, because Santa sure was good to them! They have been opening presents for days and days. January is going to be such a let down!

Lucia is a very animated present opener. Every present got a reaction similar to this one!

It's hard to get a picture of the kids all together, especially when there are presents to open. This is the best I could do!

Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays! Please accept this post in lieu of an actual holiday card AGAIN this year. I always think I should get cards made this year, but somehow I never get around to it. To all my friends (Laura, Missy, Sara, LL & Nixon, Hanna, Jenny, etc) who have kept me on your card list all these years, thank you! 10 Months

Happy 10 months, Sophie! In the past few weeks she has changed so much. First she did her first sign, which was "more" (more food, please!) Then she started waving bye-bye, and last Monday she took her first steps!

She had a 9.5 month check-up, and she weighs 19.5 pounds and is 29.5" tall.

Lucia had a Christmas program with her school last week. They sang a bunch of songs, and it was really adorable. Here is she front and center. For some reason she made this weird pose during the applause (see below). They also sang "Santa Lucia" and she got to wear the white dress and crown and hold a candle.

I asked her to stand by the tree for a picture, and I got this pose. Not sure where all the posing is coming from!

Gingerbread House

We have a new holiday tradition-- making Gingerbread houses! It was the first time for Lucia and me, but John has apparently made lots of them at school. I think it turned out pretty cute, and most of the candy managed to make it onto the house (except for the pieces that Lucy stole after, then lied about, but the evidence was in the green frosting on her face.)

The Long Winter

Both of the girls are getting over colds and it's also gotten really cold outside, so we've just been having a lazy weekend around home. Lucy has been playing and coloring pictures, and Sophie is practicing standing on her own. She keeps trying to walk but falls down on the first step. It won't be long now!

A Very Newton Thanksgiving

Thanksgiving 2011 at the Newtons is over, and it was great fun. Jill and Don graciously hosted John and I, Lucia, Sophie, Karma the pug, and cousin Alle. It was a houseful of fun!

Chris, Ben, and Meredith also came over to visit and play. At first Lucy wouldn't go in the same room with Ben and Chris, but then Chris brought out the toys and helped her build this tower for marble races. Now they are practically best friends.

We kept Sophie safely away from the marbles and preoccupied in the other room. She spent the weekend trying to stand on her own and getting even closer to walking.

Later, Sophie attacked Lucy and pulled her hair.

Lucy thought it was funny at first, but then she was over it.

Thanks so much for the invitation, the great Thanksgiving dinner, and fun company. We always love to visit Boise!

Nine Months

It was a big day for Lucia too-- she finally tried out her skis. She went down the little hill in the back by the apple tree, and loved it. Now we're trying to convince her that she's ready for the mountains!

Early Walker

Sophie is learning to walk! We brought out the baby walker toys, and she's been cruising around the house. She even lets go and stands on her own for a little bit. Won't be long before she doesn't need the toys to lean on!

45 Shopping Days

Not to be presumptious, but some people have been asking what the girls would like for Christmas. I put together a wish list on amazon for them (>>>see over here>>>) with some general ideas and comments. Lucia is really into imaginary play, art projects, books, anything with princesses, dress-up, and her dollhouse. Sophie is really into tupperware and electrical cords, and doesn't seem too interested in any sort of toys, except for the one that Lucy has in her hand at the moment.

For clothes, Lucia is wearing 4Ts, except for pants like jeans, she still is wearing 3T (but I can hardly get her to wear pants, she always wants to wear a dress or skirt.) Sophie is in 12 months right now, but will need 18 months soon. We like to call her our little chunkeroo. Probably we'll have to stop that soon or she's going to have a complex. But she's definitely got some good solid Polish genes in her.

Both girls also have 529 Utah Educational Savings Plans, and donations are always welcome in lieu of gifts. Or come visit us in Utah. Or just give big hugs next time you see us. We are still trying to figure out how we can make it back to Wisconsin for Christmas, so the best gift of all will really be just to spend the holiday with our families.

Pocatello

The first snowstorm of the year, just in time for John to run his first half-marathon! We spent Friday night in Pocatello with our friends from Bozeman, and on Saturday John and Bill ran 13 miles in temperature that started out in the teens. He successfully completed it in just under 2 hours. We don't have any pictures of him running, because I was safely back at the warm hotel enjoying the pool area with the kids. I feel a little bad we weren't there to cheer him on or be there at the finish line, but it didn't really sound fun to me!

When we got home, Lucia bundled up to go check out the snow (sorry it's a little dark).

Trick or Treat!

What a fun Halloween weekend! Lucia was really into it this year, and she had three different Halloween events to celebrate. One of her friends from school had a Halloween party on Saturday night, then there was a party at school on Halloween day, and then trick or treating!

Sophie wore stripes for her first Halloween!

Lucy dressed as a "pink princess" and she got to experience hot rollers so she could have princess hair. She thought that was pretty special.

Autumn Days

Everyone made it safely and happily through the long three sleeps. The girls had a lot of fun with grandma, grandpa and daddy, but we're all feeling sad that grandma and grandpa are heading back to Wisconsin on Tuesday. The weather has turned colder, but we bundled up and spent lots of time playing outside this weekend. Lucy can't wait for Halloween -- there's a party at school tomorrow and then trick-or-treating!

Three Sleeps

Grandma Lauren and Grandpa Bob are here for a visit! They came to help out so that I can go to a conference in Fort Collins. I'll be away for "three sleeps", my first time away from the girls in year. I'll miss them terribly, but I'm also hoping to sleep in past 6:00 am for the first time in a really long time.

It was Grandpa's birthday last week, so Lucy and I made him a cake and then we all got to sing happy birthday. Lucy got to help blow out the candles, and then she got to help blow them out about five more times after that. She's an expert now and all ready for her birthday in three months!

Sophie is happiest these days when she is standing up, chasing after Karma, or chewing on electrical cords. This kid is a handful! Here is she all ready for bed in her sleepsack, which limits her movement enough to make her settle down and sleep.

Sophie is 8 months old today! She is crawling on all fours, pulling herself to standing, and getting into everything. She also just learned to clap, she can almost wave bye-bye, and is possibly signing "all-done" (or else she just frantically waves her arms in the air). Here's a little glimpse of her at eight months.

The Dentist

Lucia had her 6-month check-up at the dentist last week, just her second dentist appointment ever, and the news wasn't good. She had two cavities on the bottom, between her molars. I have been flossing her a couple of times a week, but apparently that was not enough and she has inherited my terrible teeth and tendency towards many cavities. They happened to have an opening on Saturday morning (lucky us), so we scheduled to have her cavities filled.

Watching your 3-year old get two cavities filled is not fun. She had nitrous oxide and a movie to watch, but it was still terrible. Since the cavities were on separate sides, she had to get the novocaine twice and repeat the whole process. By the end she was crying and miserable, and so was I.

The dentist also took one look at her mouth and new immediately she is still sucking her thumb. He told us that her jaw is getting stretched out, and she really needs to stop. If only it were so simple. I am so happy that Sophie is not a thumb-sucker.

Now for the worst part. After the cavities were filled, the entire bottom of her face was numb. Once we got home I set her up on the couch to watch some t.v. and stepped away for a few minutes. When I came back, there was blood dripping down her chin, and because couldn't feel anything, she had chewed her bottom lip until it looked like raw hamburger. Then it swelled up to enormous proportions. It was awful, awful, awful. I made John stare at her for the next hour until the novocaine wore off so that she wouldn't do further damage, but it was too late.

This morning the swelling was down, but she still looks like she was in the losing end of a street brawl. We have eliminated juice from her lunch box and will diligently floss every day. Lesson learned.

Here's a picture after her cleaning, before we knew about the cavities and what lie ahead for us. I couldn't bear to take a picture of the chewed up lip... it was just too disturbing.

Today we took a little field trip to Wheeler Farm where they have been having a fun Farmer's Market on Sunday mornings. They also have a little playground, and you can walk around the farm and see the animals. Lucy was excited to see the pumpkins out, and she's already talking about fall, raking leaves, and Halloween. She asked me to take this picture of her with the pumpkin.

Later I made her sit on this tractor because it reminded me of the one my grandparents had at their farm, and I used to ride around on my grandpa's lap driving the tractor. I don't think this one still runs, but they have a lot of antique farm equipment there.

And Sophie learned a new trick today. She can pull herself up to sitting now, so this is how I found her after her morning nap.

Happy Seven Months, Sophie! This week you caught a cold at Miss Merr's and infected the whole family. So the four of us have been holed up inside on this beautiful weekend, hoping to recover by Monday morning.

She's getter better at crawling every day, now she pushes up onto her back knees and launches herself forward. She is pretty fast, and we have been baby-proofing and trying to get Lucy to keep her toys off the ground. I think it'll only be a few more days until she coordinates all the movements, and then she'll be all over the place. I am thinking of investing in a few more baby gates, because she seems to be into everything in a way that I don't ever remember Lucy doing.

Sophie is mobile! She has learned a strange sort of swimming/army crawl mode of transportation, and she got a new jumparoo that she loves to jump in. It's really fun seeing her change and how excited she is to move around and explore.

We spent Labor Day weekend in Montana at a Forest Service cabin with friends. The cabin reminded me so much of my grandparents house in Fence... almost the same layout, same kitchen cabinets, formica-top table that you pulled out from the wall when it was time to eat. I should have taken some pictures of the inside, but we were too busy having fun. There was a campfire and s'mores in the evening, and lots of outdoor playing during the day.

Lucy's school is closed this week for cleaning as they prepare to start a new school year on Tuesday. So she's spending the week back at Miss Merr's. This morning when I dropped her off she said, "Momma, please don't pick me up early today ok?" I guess that's a pretty solid endorsement!

Six Months

Happy six months Sophie! I'm a couple days late because it's been a really busy week at work, but we woke up early today and went outside to get a few pictures.

This month Sophie has mastered sitting up, and she loves to sit and play with toys and watch her big sister. She is eating great and so far likes a great variety of fruits and vegetables. She is on a schedule every day and goes to bed between 7:00 - 7:30 every night. Unfortunately for me she still wakes up in the night, usually sometime between 2-4 am to eat. But she eats quickly and then usually we both go right back to sleep.

Update: At her six month appointment, Sophie weighed 17 pounds, 9 ounces (93rd%) and was 27 1/4" long (78th%).

Have you noticed that Lucia seems to wearing the same outfits in a lot of pictures recently? That's because she has five dresses and that's all she wants to wear so they are in heavy rotation.

Harvest

After a few weeks of tinkering in the garden to solve an over-watering problem, we have our first veggies! This zucchini tripled in size overnight, so I won't let the next ones get so big and seedy. I thought Lucy would be all excited to eat it, but apparently she doesn't like store-bought or home-grown zucchini. Sophie remains neutral and indifferent, which seems to be her attitude towards most things.

A Demonstration of Rote Memorization

Lucy surprises us almost every day with random facts and tidbits that she is learning at school. For instance, last week in the car she started talking about the Pioneers and said, "Momma. Did you know that the pioneers had holes in their shoes and there were no stores to buy new shoes. And they crossed through the mountains and when they saw it here they said, 'THIS IS IT! THIS IS IT!"

John got his own surprise the other day when she started reciting the Pledge of Allegiance, which we had no idea that she knew. She's got the words nearly right, and I was able to get it on video. When she's a little bit older we will teach her what it means to be a conscientious objector, but for now we'll let it go. And there's a little shot of Sophie too... her video debut.

Bitty Baby has a new ballerina outfit and it came with a matching headband for Lucy! She's been playing dress-up all weekend and putting on dance shows for us. What fun! Thank you Aunt Renee, it is definitely a hit.

Sophie has embarked on a life filled with real food. So far she's had rice cereal, bananas and sweet potatoes, and she's enjoying every bite. Here she is having some sweet potatoes. She finished the whole jar! John took this one, and I think he's out of practice because the focus is on my hand and not on Sophie. But you get the idea.

Sophie also got upgraded from our bedroom to her crib in Lucy's room. Lucy has taken it very well, and so far she's really excited to share her room and didn't seem to mind that most of her toys got moved downstairs to make room for the crib. In the morning when Sophie starts waking up she runs over to the crib and sings her songs and makes silly faces, and it's really sweet to see her being such a nice big sister.

Five Months

Sophie is five months old! She has mastered rolling over both ways, she likes to blow spit bubbles, hang on to her toes, and hold soft blankies or bibs and rub them on her face. She's getting really fun and much more animated and we're soaking up every minute of baby time.

Let's go camping!

Well, we're back in Utah. The trip home was a little challenging. Lucy was pretty good (other than being terrified of the poor guy that had to sit next to us on the plane), but Sophie cried and cried and then had a major blowout with poop all over her jammies. So that was fun... but we made it and now we're back in the intense heat of the Utah summer. What better to do on a 95 degree day then set up a tent, fill it with a comforter and "go camping", right?

Here's what our yard looks like now. In April we had a load of topsoil brought in to fill the former RV parking area, then installed sprinklers and planted grass. The grass is mostly weeds, but I guess it's better than before and hopefully with a little more work we'll have more grass than weeds.

Sophie really likes her stroller, so she's been hanging out there while Lucy and I play.

Jumping Beans

The vacation continues with more days of play. Lucy spent a day at Jaelyn and Addisyn's house, trying out the swingset and trampoline. The trampoline is moved right up against the patio door since they don't have their deck built yet, so the girls can walk right from the living room onto the trampoline.

The basement is a little girl's heaven, filled with dress-up clothes, kitchens, babies, and even a karaoke machine. Here Addisyn and Lucy are waiting for the karaoke song to load before giving us a performance. Lucy is happily wearing butterfly wings and a tiara, and I think she momentarily traded her magic wand for a microphone.

Sophie was hanging out on the floor avoiding the dogs and practicing rolling over. She rolled over from back to front, so now she is a pro! She'll be crawling before we know it.

Vacation Time!

It's July, and that means vacation time! We're back in Wisconsin for two weeks, and Lucia is having a great time playing with all her cousins and introducing Sophie to everyone.

She went in the water with Ana (I can't really call it swimming, but they had fun playing in the lake.)

Celebrating Four Months

Sophie is 4 months old today! She is growing like a weed and doesn't show any signs of stopping. Although she rolled over on Memorial Day weekend, she hasn't done it again. But she does frantically kick her feet and she can slide across the wooden floor or turn in a circle on the carpeting. She has a doctor's appointment on Tuesday with the "baby-atrician" (as Lucy calls it), and we're going to see about starting some cereal since she's been waking up hungry at 4 am. I want my good sleeper back!

Update: Sophie weighed 15 pounds, 7 ounces (88%) and was 25 3/4" tall (94%) at her 4-month appointment. Even though her head looks really big, it is actually only in the 78th percentile!

Last night at about 10:00 (when she was supposed to be sleeping) Lucy brought me this picture and said, "Here's a picture I made for you to take to your office. It's a picture of a party." Isn't it cute? She has suddenly gone from random scribbling to drawing people with arms and legs and smiling faces. She also wrote her name on the back, which I didn't scan. But she is so smart and loves drawing and letters and learning. I'm sure she'll be reading within a year. Crazy!

1st Day of School

It's been an emotional week around our house. Friday was Lucy's last day at Miss Merr's, and it was so sad for everyone. She gave hugs to the kids and a big, big hug to Miss Merr who has taken care of her 5 days a week since she was four months old. We were all crying. It was kind of funny though too, because at 5 pm on her very last day there, she finally pooped on the potty. She has been potty-trained since Christmas, except she would only poop at home in a pull-up. But she was literally in the bathroom when I got there to pick her up on the last day. What a breakthrough, and just in time for school!

Then today she was off to all-day preschool at the little Montessori school by our house. There was a moment of hesitation before we left the house when she said, "Maybe I should just go to Miss Merr's, because Kieran and Crosby are REALLY going to miss me." But we pressed on and she had a successful first day of school.

A Memorable Weekend

We had a really nice visit from our Bozeman friends (Bill, Melanie, Ana, Megan & Griffin) for the long Memorial Day weekend. It was a little bit crowded and a little bit boisterous with all NINE of us together in the house, but that made it all the more fun. Their baby Griffin is 10 1/2 months old now, and already weighs 27 pounds (to put it in perspective, Lucy only weighs 30 pounds). He's crawling and getting into everything, and it was a good preview of what it'll be like in a few more months when Sophie starts moving around. It was also a big weekend for Sophie -- she rolled over for the first time on Saturday!

Ana & Megan-- they are best friends (most of the time) and play together great. I hope Lucy and Sophie grow up to be as close as these two are.

It's been rainy and cold here. Kind of matched my mood of having to go back to work this week. On Saturday, the sun finally came out and Lucy and her friend Maya had a little playdate at the house. They got to play with Lucy's new sand table (very convenient for anyone who doesn't like to get dirty, since you don't actually have to sit in or touch the sand if you don't want to), and they played on the swings and slide, and blew lots and lots of bubbles.

I asked the girls to smile and say "cheese" and this is what Maya gave me. I think all 2-year olds have a version of that cheesy grin.

Sophie is three months old today! She is healthy, strong, and happy and doing great. This week I had to go back to work, so Sophie started going to Miss Merr's with Lucy. On Monday Lucy was so excited that Sophie was going inside with her and she proudly showed her off to the other kids. By today the novelty had worn off and this morning she asked, "But WHY does Sophie have to come to Miss Merr's?" But it will be short-lived, because Lucy is all signed up to start at her new Montessori preschool in June. Then we'll see what happens when she realizes Sophie is at Miss Merr's without her! But she's very excited about going to school, so hopefully it will all be fine.

Her eyes are still really blue. I wonder if they'll still change? They are so different than Lucy's dark eyes.

I couldn't get Sophie to smile, so I called in Lucy. Usually Sophie smiles anytime Lucy is around, because she is quite entertaining. But she was pretty tired tonight and we couldn't get even a little smile.

Boise - Part Two

On Saturday we took the kids to a nature park in Boise, and they got to see some fish, two deer, lots of birds and a mama goose with her goslings. Here they are looking at the fish.

Saturday was also the day of the Kentucky Derby, so Renee, Francie, and Jill put together a little hat-making party in the lobby of the hotel. Initially the hats were supposed to be for the kids, but the adults (after a few mint juleps) had way more fun with it.

The hats even made a surprise reappearance that evening at the reception. Here's Tracy, Mike, Max, and baby London (who was born the same exact day as Sophie!)

Boise - Part One

We spent a long weekend in Boise celebrating the wedding of Ben and Meredith. It was so nice to see lots of family that we don't see often, and to introduce Sophie to lots of new people. We all stayed at the same hotel, so we got to spend lots of time together. On Friday night we went to a family dinner hosted by Aunt Jill and Uncle Don. On Saturday we took the little girls to a park and then went to the reception that evening. In between there was a Kentucky Derby hat-making party, a Boise Tour of Homes charade, some golfing, quite a bit of alcohol consumption, and various other shenanigans. New Perspective

Sophie had her two-month well baby appointment last week, and she's over the 90th percentile for height (24 1/4") and weight (12 lbs 14 oz). She's also getting a flat spot on the back of her head, so we've been working on more tummy time and we pulled out the bumbo seat to start working on sitting. She's still working on head control so she can't sit there for long, but I think she likes to be up where she can see what's going on.

We kicked off Easter weekend with an Easter Egg Hunt and coloring eggs.

Sophie spent the weekend on a cycle of eat, sleep, poop, bathe and repeat. Look how she likes to sleep -- no swaddling for this bed hog!

That tricky Easter bunny hid Lucy's basket in the bathtub, and it took her quite a while to find it.

She was pretty happy when she finally discovered the basket and all the good loot, AND she got to have marshmallow bunnies and jelly beans for breakfast.

Another new post -- three in one week must be a record! Today I'm sharing my good friend Michelle's new baby, Leo. He was born exactly one week ago. He's even more adorable in person. I'm really excited because Leo will go to Miss Merr's with Sophie and they will spend their days together. Today was the first meeting and hopefully they'll be great friends.

Our little chunky monkey is 2 months old already! We'll find out next week how much she weighs, but she is definitely packing on the pounds. I think her healthy appetite is helping her become a good sleeper-- last night she slept from 10 pm until 5 am. She's a happy, mellow baby and we are so in love with her.

Update: Sophie weighed 12 pounds 14 ounces (93%) and was 24 1/4" long (96%) at her two month appt!

Spring in the Mountains

Well, today was going to be the day that Lucy finally got to try out her new skiis. It was a nice warm spring day, and Alta has free skiing on the bunny hill. Perfect! But she wasn't having any part of it. John finally just took her up to Alta so she could see the skiiers and see what it was all about, but she didn't want to try it. Instead they went on a little hike to see a waterfall. Meanwhile back in the city, Sophie and mama had their own little excursion to Target (but we don't have any pictures to document it).

Auntie Susie taught Lucy a new game called Slapjack while we were in Arizona. She had a rough start, encouraging her opponent to "SNAP IT!" whenever a Jack turned up. But now she has gotten the hang of it, and she races to be the winner. She'll be ready to take on the Glimes/Rochons the next time we're in Wisconsin. Hide your quarters!

We're back from Arizona, and Lucy and I are recovering from the colds we got while we were there. Luckily Sophie seems to have avoided it. We returned home to a bunch of packages (fun!) including this little embroidered hat and outfit from Grandma Glime. Sophie was a good model and let me take lots of pictures. She is getting to be very alert and awake much more. Her face has really filled in, and her legs are getting chubby too. We've gotten a few smiles (but I haven't gotten a photo yet), and she is starting to hold her head up and look around. Still not sleeping more than 3 hours at a time usually, but hopefully more sleep will come soon!

One Month

Yesterday Sophie celebrated her one month birthday in Arizona, visiting Grandma Lauren and Grandpa Bob in Lake Havasu. We made the drive with Auntie Susie on Wednesday. Both of the girls seem to be good travelers, so it wasn't too bad of a drive. It just took extra time for all the stops to feed Sophie who wants to eat every 2-3 hours.

The night before we left for Arizona, it was raining in Salt Lake. Lucy was so excited to try out her new rain jacket (that I won in a Facebook contest!) She put on her yellow rain jacket, purple rain boots and grabbed her umbrella to go dancing in the rain.

Circle Time

The days are passing by in a blur... I can't believe Sophie will be three weeks old tomorrow. She had her 2-week appointment last Friday, and she already weighed 8lbs 3 oz (50th %) and was 21" long (75th%). Lucy is going to childcare on Mon/Wed/Fri and stays home with me and Sophie the other days. It's been pretty challenging for her and she's been really clingy and whiny, especially needing anything and everything the second Sophie starts eating. I've been trying to come up with art projects and activities to keep her busy (other than watching TV which is all she wants to do), but she came up with Circle Time all on her own!

I've been trying to get some pictures of the girls together, but Lucy is not very cooperative. Here's a couple from today where at least they are in the picture together.

We're home! Yesterday we came home from the hospital, and Grandpa Bob and Grandma Lauren arrived from Arizona. We introduced Sophie to Karma, who couldn't be more uninterested. Lucy is still being a proud big sister, and is helping change diapers, pick out clothes and has started imitating nursing with her own baby dolls. Sophie is super mellow, sleeping most of the day. She doesn't really cry, and we can hardly keep her awake. She likes to snuggle or hang out in her cradle and eat every few hours. Don't you just want to snuggle her all day???

Baby Sister! She's here, she just doesn't have a name yet. There are two names that I really love, but I cannot commit (John is fine with either and is leaving the final decision to me.) Hopefully tomorrow will be the day!

Born at 8:04 am on 2/18/11, she weighed 7 lbs 7 oz and was 20.5" long. She's just a little bit bigger than Lucy was (she was 7.2lbs and 20".) The scheduled c-section went great, no problems or complications. I never had any contractions and walked myself into the operating room. It was pretty strange to hop up on the operating table, and then 30 minutes later hear the baby crying. And did she cry! She was pretty angry to leave her warm little cocoon and enter the real world. But after an hour or so she calmed down, and now she's been nursing and sleeping all day. She's beautiful and perfect and we are so in love with her already.

39 Weeks

Here I am at 39 weeks, about 12 hours before we are scheduled to meet our baby girl. I look really tired, and I am. I haven't been sleeping well for months. But other than that, this has been a pretty easy, uneventful pregnancy. I'm feeling a little bit sad to be at the end of my pregnancy and leave the days of this quiet, portable, baby behind. But I can't wait to see her, hold her, discover her personality, and introduce her to her big sister. We'll post new baby pictures as soon as we can!

Preparing the Nest

Only 12 days to go, and we're getting everything ready for the new baby. We unpacked all the baby supplies (it is a pink explosion) and brought the pack-n-play and changing table into our room. Lucy is so excited she can hardly stand it. We've been preparing her by reading books about being a big sister, looking at her own baby pictures and talking a lot about what a new baby is like (and what a new baby can't do like sleep in a bunk bed or eat pb & J sandwiches.) She's ready to be our big helper, changing diapers and bringing things for mommy. So hopefully the transition won't be too difficult, although I'm sure she'll have some tough times.

The only thing left to do is decide on a name! We are stuck and keep going back and forth between a few names. Hopefully once she's born and we see what she looks like, one will seem like the obvious choice.

Utah is famous for "The Greatest Snow on Earth" (it's even on our license plates.) Today Lucia got to experience a little of that powder first hand when her daddy took her sledding up in the mountains. John managed to record the two of them with his phone, and the look on her face at the end is priceless.

Good job, Santa! Lucy is really happy with all of her presents, and she has been playing with them all day today. The only mistake was probably mama's choice of "Wizard of Oz" in which she burst into tears at the sight of the Wicked Witch. So that one's going back into the closet for a while longer. Other than that though, she's a pretty happy girl today.

The scooter is a hit. It was about 45 degrees today, so we went out to try it out. She's the most cautious scooter rider ever... probably would take us an hour to get to the end of the street. At least we won't have to deal with broken bones.

Auntie Susie got her a dollhouse, and she has been having a lot of fun playing with the little family. She even put her "fishy fishy foshies" in the house.

She also got a box of dress-up clothes, including this Cinderella dress and some high heel shoes. It took her about 20 minutes to get comfortable walking in them, and she's barely taken them off all day. I wasn't even sure she would like them, but I don't know why I doubted it. Her first word was "shoes" after all...

The other things she got are both leapfrog toys -- a little laptop and a Tag reader. She has spent hours today playing with both of them. Finally, the biggest hit of all -- a three-pack of lip balm, which she calls her "ChOpstick". She'll never have chapped lips again, or anywhere else on her face with the way she appies it!

A Christmas Miracle

Merry Christmas Eve! We're having a quiet Christmas in Utah this year. It's actually kind of a relief not to be traveling on Christmas Eve or Christmas Day like we have the past few years, but we definitely miss all our family in Wisconsin. Since I have a nice long break, we've been spending the past two days on potty training. We had our own little Christmas miracle this morning when Lucy pooped on the potty (a major breakthrough.) Hopefully by January 3rd when we go back to work we'll be all done with diapers and pull-ups.

Tonight Lucy got some new Christmas pajamas, and she is pretty wired from Christmas Eve dessert of ice cream and the anticipation of Santa. We tried to get some pictures by the tree, with mixed results.

She's also been saying the cutest/funniest things lately, and I really should be writing them down. The other day Miss Merr gave us Christmas presents, including one for the baby sister. Lucy took the present and said, "I'll take this one and give it to her when she gets out." So cute!

She was pretty happy to have presents to open, until we realized that one of the presents she opened was actually for her baby sister. Then it was all "NOOOOO. IT'S MINE!" Hmmm... I think we're going to have our hands full in a couple of months.

Turkey Day in Wisconsin

Lucy and I had a really nice visit to Wisconsin for Thankgsiving, despite two really rough travel days going there and back (we missed our connection both times and ended up with long, miserable layovers in Minneapolis). We spent most of our vacation visiting people and playing with cousins, while John and Karma made the trip to Boise to visit the Newtons.

New skis! Lucia is ready to hit the slopes for the very first time this winter. She was pretty excited about the skis, and even tried them out in the hallway. We'll see if she's as enthusiastic when she's outside trying it for real, but for now she can't wait to go skiing with Daddy.

P.S. Lucy has suggested that we name her baby sister "Dora." Hmmm... we'll have to think about that one. Aunt Jill has also given some suggestions, so the competition is on.

Halloween Fun

Lucy helped Daddy carve the pumpkin this year. She even got her hands dirty and helped clean out the inside!

Today she dressed up as a little ladybug and we went to a Halloween party. She painted a pumpkin, ate a sucker, and went trick-or-treating through the dorms at my work. We are supposed to be trick-or-treating again in our neighborhood tonight, but it's pouring rain so I don't know if we'll be able to go. Maybe we can try again tomorrow, but none of the mormon neighbors will answer the door (because it's Sunday!) Ah, the joys of Utah.

I mentioned a few weeks ago that my sister, Sue, and my mom came for a short visit. This was supposed to be a vacation for them (well my mom's always on vacation, so really it was Sue's vacation). But she has a hard time sitting still, and before I knew what happened, she and John had started on a project to build this retaining wall in the yard. It's going to be my vegetable garden next summer, and I think it turned out great. Thanks, Sue! You sure are a hard worker and you build a pretty nice wall. Now if you could only get us a load of topsoil...

We were out in the yard today and I was just taking some pictures of random things, and I really noticed how much Karma is aging. He's only 8 1/2, but he's mostly deaf, pretty darn lazy (well, he's always been lazy), overweight, and now his black parts are almost completely gray. Lucy has lately become a lot more affectionate towards him, calling him "Karmie" and giving him hugs and kisses (which he is pretty indifferent about, but he usually just sits and takes it). He can be quite a pain to have around, but I have to give him props for how tolerant he is of Lucy.

Secret Lake

Last weekend I went with 18 of my new international students, two co-workers, and Lucy on a short hike in the mountains. The hike is about 1/2 mile in to the lake and then a 1/2 mile back. Lucy did pretty well except for the very last climb to the top of a ridge to get to the lake. I had to carry her up the steepest part, but otherwise she mostly walked the whole way.

It was a really sunny day, but the wind was pretty cold so that's why she doesn't look so happy. But the scenery is gorgeous, and it's only about 25 minutes from our house.

As we were leaving, we spotted this mama moose and her baby right by the road!

John got up early this morning to go hang gliding, so Lucy and I (and Squirt the turtle) decided to go out for breakfast. We had bagels, and Lucy ate a whole bagel all by herself. She's a pretty good eater.

Also, as far as baby #2 is concerned, Lucy does not know anything yet. She's not very patient and has no sense of time, so to spare a million questions about when the baby sister or brother is coming, we are going to wait as long as possible to let her know.

The Family Tree

We are pleased to announce that our family tree is growing! Baby #2 is due on February 25th. Here's a picture of the little one at 12 weeks. Even though it doesn't really look like it in this picture, I was assured that baby has two arms and two legs. We're planning to find out the gender in early October. Either way, we're excited for Lucia to become a big sister!

Park Silly Sunday Market

Last weekend we went to Park City for the Park Silly Sunday Market, and there was lots of fun stuff for kids like a bouncy house, art projects, and drumming. Lucy had a pretty fun time, and I took some pics with my new iPhone. It's pretty convenient not to lug around the huge camera, and the iPhone also takes great video. I should never miss another kodak moment.

Also, big news! We have made significant progress in potty training in the last two weeks. The breakthrough came after we collected a huge bag of candy at the Pioneer Day Parade, and then I used that to bribe her to go potty. I had tried stickers and m & ms previously, but this huge bag of candy was just irrestible. Now she can stay dry all day and tells us when she needs to go pee. Still working on going #2 on the potty, but hopefully that will come soon.

Running Shoes

Lucy got a new pair of sneakers and when we gave them to her she said, "These are Addisyn's running shoes." So, apparently Addisyn has a very similar pair? Either way, we convinced her they were Lucy's new running shoes, so she put them right on and went outside. Here she is trying them out.

Rock Star

My friend Melanie had a baby boy last Monday, and on Friday (of the same week) they drove 7+ hours to Salt Lake City to attend a friend's wedding. She's a rock star for sure. Baby Griffen is adorable and snuggly, and big sisters Ana and Megan seem totally in love with their new baby brother already. It was a short but great visit and it was so nice to see our friends again and meet the newest member of their family.
